See below note and photo from George Morris a former volunteer
from Falkirk days who now resides in Switzerland.
I attach for your interest a picture from one of our local
lines, the Furka Mountain Railway. The engine is a 2-6-0 4 cylinder compound,
with a difference. The inside, high pressure cylinders (which can be switched in
and out) drive the cog wheel for the rack and pinion. The outside cylinders
drive the wheels for adhesion and combined running, all this on meter-gauge. The
valve gear is something else! The engines were sold from this line to Vietnam in
1923, when the line was electrified. After the Vietnam war they were abandoned
were they stood until 3 2-6-0s and 2 0-8-0s were repatriated to Switzerland in
the late 80's. At the moment 2 of the 2-6-0s are operating the mountain railway
(the "mainline" was put through a 17 km base tunnel in 1984) and the first of
the 0-8-0s is under renovation in Chur.
