10th July 2010

Lots of activity over the last 4 weeks or so with particularly good volunteer turn outs on Monday evenings.

Austerity No. 7:- The boiler has been steam tested but failed with a small crack in the backhead. A specialist contractor is being engaged to carry out the repair in conjunction with our boiler inspector. Due to essential repair work on the Shire and No.1 progress on No7 big end bearings has almost ground to a halt.

CR 419 :- The boiler has now been inspected at Ian Riley's works and grooving has been detected at the foundation ring and a crack in the back head. Jim & Brian have visited Ian Riley's to discuss what has to be done. Due to the scope of the repair now being much larger than originally planned discussions are under way with various bodies to seek grant aid for this major repair. The driving axles have been removed to allow detailed measurements to be taken for the manufacture of new axle boxes.

BR Standard 4 80105:- Out of traffic at the moment due to the super heater flue leaks. Expanding of the flues is in progress and the locomotive is due to be transported to Wensleydale mid week.

LNER 'Morayshire':- Kept in reserve traffic due to a broken leaf on LH driver axle spring. The driving axle springs are to be sent away for refurbishment after the our next 'Thomas' weekend.

'Fair Maid' :-  Is very nearly finished however its taking a bit of a back seat at the moment due to more pressing tasks.

No.1 :-  The repairs to the joint at the foundation ring have been resolved and the engine is back in service.

Prestongrange No.6: No progress at all over the last few months.

Storage:- Transfer of material is now well underway.
