No.20 Wemyss Private Railway
Built by Andrew Barclay in 1939 (Works No.2068).
One of Britain’s largest 0-6-0 designs and used on the extensive Weymss Private Railway system in East Fife.
This Engine is now fully dismantled and the extent of the damage to the frames horn guide and spring hangers has been evaluated and is far more extensive than that was initially hoped. The frames were tested by MPI and the extent and the amount of severe cracking and historical poor welding repairs is so significant that if it was to be restored it would need new frames, new cast steel horn guides and horn ties as well as a full set of brasses. The boiler is in reasonable condition although there are areas of significant pitting of the firebox wrappers and wastage of rivets etc. A spare set of axles complete with new tyres is in stock for this engine. These wheel sets have had the journals skimmed and tyres profiled. Also in stock for this loco is a brand new cylinder block.
At this moment in time it’s future has not been decided. Potentially a cosmetic restoration or a full heavy overhaul. (hundreds of thousands of pounds that we don’t have!)
